Chapter Nine
âHey, sleepy head,â Morgan quipped as Harper shuffled out of her bedroom and into the living area.
The teen growled some sort of response that wasnât intelligible. She threw herself onto the sofa, pulled a festive red-and-green throw over her plain white, flannel pajamas then grabbed for the TV remote. She also had the worst case of bedhead Morgan had ever seen. No doubt it would take dedication later to untangle the mess.
âI guess the rural air hasnât miraculously made you a morning person.â She set aside the book sheâd been readingâan actual paperback romance instead of a digital version on the device of her choiceâand glanced at the teen. âWhat would you like to do today? I thought about maybe going into Nashville to finish Christmas shopping, then weâd grab lunch. After that, Iâd like your help in planning Christmas dinner.â
âJust stop right there.â Harper held up a hand. She narrowed her eyes. âYouâre planning a dinner, like, in making reservations somewhere?â
âNo.â A wash of heat stole through Morganâs cheeks. âI thought it would be a nice gesture to try my hand at making a big, old-fashioned dinner for us all.â That was another thing she remembered, and missed, from when the family got together. The dinners with so much food on the table and countertops it took three days to eat through it all. In her mind, food meant love, and it didnât matter that she was completely inept in that department. She could learn that skill and give that gift to the people who mattered in her life now.
âOh, please!â Harper rolled her eyes. âWe already know youâll burn half of it and the rest will be inedible for other reasons. Why not just go up to the lodge and let the experts prepare it? Plus, no cleanup.â
âI donât know why, but lately Iâve felt compelled to work on my domestic skills.â She refused to admit to Harper that since meeting Carter and his son, sheâd wanted to take care of them. Even with her past failures with relationships and her inability to connect with the teen, she wanted to try again. Despite Carter being a self-proclaimed whiz in the kitchen, she desired to do this for them.
âYouâve got the hots for Ranger Man.â Her niece said it matter-of-factly without malice or teasing.
âNo I donât.â She didnât know how to classify âthe hotsâ and she certainly didnât think it would take a handful of days to get them.
âMmmhmm. And here youâre always giving me dire warnings about the pitfalls of dating.â Harper assessed her for long moments with questions in her blue eyes. Every second that ticked by added a layer of anxiety to Morganâs nerves. Finally, she nodded. âWhatever. You know how men are. Hope the rangerâs not a yeller.â
âSomehow, I donât think he is,â Morgan responded in a quiet voice.
Harper shrugged. âDonât say I didnât warn you once your heartâs broken.â She waved a hand in dismissal. âIn answer to your earlier assumption, sorry, but Iâve already got plans.
